Every month we celebrate the achievements of one of our fantastic interpreters. This month we are proud to congratulate Mariam and share her story. Thank you Mariam for all your hard work and for all the amazing client feedback we get about you.

In my home country of Ethiopia, I studied English from a young age and really loved it. I went on to graduate from university and eventually became an English teacher. I worked in a school and really valued this experience as I love helping others.

But in 2004 I headed to the UK, seeking asylum from the dangerous situation in Ethiopia. Once I arrived, I found the asylum process very difficult; I was in limbo and had no certainty about my future. I was not allowed to work, so I used that time to take on lots of voluntary opportunities as an interpreter: for friends, for family and for local charities. I speak Amharic, Arabic, Saho and Tigrinya and can interpret all these languages into English.

Once I received my settlement status, I decided to pursue a career in interpreting and in 2012 I started working for Clear Voice. I love being an interpreter – it’s a really rewarding job, knowing that I am helping others who are struggling.

Working for Clear Voice is my favourite. The team are very good, they really respect their interpreters, and if I have any problems, they are always there to solve them. There are so many great things about Clear Voice.
